4th League match at Cobham

John Sands

How do you like your Thoroughbreds .... well done, BBQ`d or burnt ?

Wearied by early morning World Cup viewing the TB`s trudged into the Cobham oven to to battle

A fast outfield with short boundaries looked attractive to batsmen and winning the toss the TB`s elected to bowl while their batteries were still out of the red
Cobham found boundaries consistently in the first 8 overs reaching 74 with the Epsom only gaining two wickets.
Overs 9-12 saw Cobham step it up with 56 scored the total to taking to 120
Epsom`s frustrations continued until Dave struck in the penultimate over with Cobham ending on 147.
Our bowling performance was somewhere in the middle with the downhill strip causing some to over pitch.
Richard kept with great skill and athleticism to some wayward leg side stuff.
Cobham did hit the ball clean but on many occasions hit airborne but none fell close to TB hands
Overall fielding was good but we failed to stop Cobham pinching singles or cutting off straight drives at the boundary.

Epsom opened with Ian scoring 8 off the first two balls...good start!.....next ball Pat was run out when backing up too far.
Seeking to regain the upper hand and seduced by the short boundaries Ian was caught twice in the 3rd over. The first four overs left Epsom 20/4.
Not perturbed by our poor start Roger and Richard picked it up with the pair putting on 42. Richard played well keeping shots low and pulling anything short. roger played the shot of the day with flashing extra cover drive.
Alan and Mahendra up next and really made the most of anything loose. Alan suffering with knee problems performed bravely whilst obviously in discomfort. Cobham kindly donated to the cause by bowling 6 byes during the 2nd over. The third over for this pair saw TB`s lose their 5th wicket with Cobham`s catching so reliable.
Dave and John as last pair began seeking 47 to win. Tight fielding off good bowling meant this pair struggled to get into a rhythm losing a wicket in the first over. Some success in hitting boundaries put the game into a competitive place but again a good catch and an over head delivery outfoxed John so 2 more wickets were conceded. A debate about this Moonball took place between Colbags( Colin) at square leg umpire and the Cobham Umpire(Mr Mega dentures) with Colin declaring it a no ball which was met with a blunt refusal by the Cobham Umpire " I know the rules but I don`t agree with them"
Thanks for trying Colin ( The Donald would be proud of you)

Thanks to BOB and COLIN for their support, net bowling and umpiring.

As my friend from Naples often remarks "Shoulda Woulda Coulda" but his english is no better than my italian.
